"The wind blew, and I heard it. The leaves crunched under my feet, and i felt every one, unclouded by temptation."
Inspired by Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest, one brave soul decided to do the unthinkable in today's tech-addicted culture, and stop using their phone for 25 hours every week. They sought to connect with the real world, and touch some grass.
MIKE: I figured if I'm unplugging to connect more with the world around me, I should reach out, yknow? So i set up lunch with some friends I haven't seen in a couple years, we went and had a picnic. LILA: Oh, how nice! I wish I got to do that. MIKE: Ah.... sorry. LILA: No, it's okay!! INTERVIEWER: How did it go? MIKE: Well, it was.... okay, I guess. Beautiful weather! Um, They all thought it was really cool I was going phoneless, um, except one friend there, she was saying.... INTERVIEWER: What did she say? MIKE: (fidgeting) Ah, that she won't let her kid get a smartphone till she's married n'out of the house, cuz she doesnt want her getting exposed to lgbt stuff at a young age. I mean, she didn't say it like that, but that's the gist, yknow, I don't really want to repeat what she said. [EVERYONE GRIMACES, HISSES THROUGH TEETH, ETC] MIKE: And I was like, oh yikes, but everyone else was kinda nodding, like, yeah thats a little extreme but her hearts in the right place! And obviously I couldn't, like, tell my groupchat. In the bathroom quick like "can you believe these guys," you can't. INTERVIEWER: Right. So you said...? MIKE: Well, I realized I was completely alone in my opinion. So I tried to push, I just said, like, "if she's gay or something it'll probably come up anyway, though," and my other friend said "yeah but the technology, they push it on you on social media," and I just changed the subject I guess. I felt very alone.KMKMKM: (Sternly) Now, Jadis had some incredible moments. Don't go underestimating her. (they sigh) See, that's the kind of conversation you can only get in the world of Phone.
